Alongside 22-year-old Devin Obleanis and an unapprehended third suspect, Semple met with Rafael Delossantos, age 23, on Victoria Street in Baldwin on October 25, 2021.
Obleanis had texted Delossantos and agreed to meet up just before 2 p.m. with the intention of buying marijuana.
However, Semple and Obleanis pulled up behind Delossantos’ car, climbed inside the young man’s vehicle, and held him at gunpoint.
They stole Delossantos’ marijuana and shot him twice before fleeing.
Delossantos died as a result of his injuries.
Semple and Obleanis were arrested on the Meadowbrook State Parkway in North Merrick in December 2021.
“Rafael was a young man with a family who loved him,” said DA Anne T. Donnelly. “That family endured his loss and sat every day during this defendant’s trial to ensure justice was done.”
Semple was convicted of murder and robbery, both first- and second-degree.
At his sentencing on Friday, May 3, he faces up to 25 years in prison.
Obleanis, for his part, pleaded guilty to the same charges in September 2022 and is due for sentencing on Monday, April 15.
The investigation into the third suspect remains ongoing.
